My Visit To The Tate Modern

I went to the Tate modern gallery and selected two art pieces to study and do a review on. I enjoyed myself as I had to go through room to room to decide which ones I would select, for there was so many art works that were very good and inspiring but it wasn’t very long when i did select two to do my review on. The selected work I chose is named Camouflage painted by Andy Warhol who is one of the most influential artists of the post-war period. And the second named Lilith inspired by Anselm kiefer.

Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh, PA, in 6 Aug 1928. He is recognised as the most influential artist during the post-war period. He is famous for his Pop Art and images which made for the popular press. Andy Warhol used Acrylic paint and silkscreen ink on canvas to design theses marvellous art piece. The reason i really love Andy Warhol camouflage because it looks very computer generated and graphical which I am a big fan of graphical art and seeing Andy Warhol is just another great piece of art. This work reminds me war because soldiers use camouflage to blend in with their surroundings to prevent them from being spotted by the enemy. Which also reminds me of one my favourite video games called metal gear solid 3; a 3D action adventure game that lets you experience the thrill of sneaking past the enemy without being seen. You play the role of snake, which must infiltrate enemy territory and carry out a top secret mission. If the enemy sees you, they’ll call for reinforcements and things are bound to get rough. So wearing camouflage will allow snake to blend in with his surroundings to avoid detection by the enemy. It also reminds me of how people try to blend in with society to be accepted like how soldiers use camouflage to allow nature to accept them for their advantage. His works I believe was inspired in the time of war for at the time camouflage was a new look in art.

This work was inspired by Anselm kiefer a German painter and sculpture that was born in Donaverchingen in 1945. he used materials like straw, ash, clay, lead and stellar for his work which i really like because it creates a different meaning; the composition of his works are good with a destructive style. He is known as one of the best and most successful artist after the World War 2.One of his works is called Lilith which is supposed to be horrific vision of urban city engulfed in a fiery blaze. He used dust to and earth to spread through his paint to give a apocalyptic effect. The first time i saw this painting in the museum I thought it to be a forest engulfed in a haze. This painting is supposed to be about Lilith a mythical female derived from Hebrew mythology. In this mythology Lilith is supposed to be the wife of Adam; a female Mesopotamian storm demon associated with the wind bearing diseases, illness and death. in this painting kiefer waned to show the nature of Lilith as she brings destruction upon Oscar Niemeyer’s buildings.
